Not every dog can swim.

Most owners find that out in deep water, which is the worst place to find it out.

A padded float under the chin, a handle across the back, and reflective bands down both sides. Built for the dogs that ride low in the water.

Best for Dogs that sit low in the water — short muzzles, dense muscle, short legs · Learning to swim · Boats and pools, with you there
Not for Long-coated dogs · Dogs who startle at loud noise · Any dog left near water on his own
Safety A life jacket is not a lifeguard. Never leave a dog in water on his own — in one, or out of one.
Sizing Size by weight, then check his chest. Do not automatically size up.

The dogs that go under

Short muzzles. Pugs, French bulldogs and English bulldogs swim with their heads tipped back to keep their noses clear of the water. That drops the back end, and it tires them fast.

Dense muscle. Muscle is heavier than water. Fat is lighter. A lean, muscular bull breed has less to float on than a broader, softer dog of the same weight.

Short legs and a deep chest. A dachshund or a corgi paddles with very little reach for the body he is pulling.

And a pool has one set of steps. A dog who goes in at the far end has to swim the whole length of it to get back out, past sides he cannot climb. That is the swim this vest is for.

What it does

  • A float under the chin. A padded flap sits under the jaw and holds the head up, so the muzzle stays clear when he tires. It unclips — take it off once he swims confidently and keep the rest of the vest.
  • A handle across the back. One grab lifts him out — off a pontoon, up a steep bank, over the side of a boat, or out of a pool when he cannot find the steps.
  • A D-ring above the handle. Clip a lead to it to keep him in range in open water, or on the walk down to the lake so the vest goes on once and stays on.
  • Three reflective bands each side. For dusk on the lake, and for finding a dark dog against dark water.
  • Mesh belly panel. Drains and dries faster than a solid panel, and sits flatter against the chest.
  • Buckles at the neck and belly. Side-release clips plus a hook-and-loop belly panel, so it adjusts to the dog you have.

How to fit it

  1. Fasten the belly straps first, then the neck
  2. Two fingers should slide under every strap — no more, no less
  3. Test it in shallow water you can stand up in, before anything deeper
  4. Watch how he sits in it. If his back end drops, it is too loose.

Sizing — read this bit

Size by weight first — it is the clearest line between sizes. Then check that his chest girth falls inside the band for that size.

Size Weight Chest girth Neck Back length
XS 2.5 – 4 kg 30 – 42 cm 25 – 35 cm 21 cm
S 4 – 7 kg 41 – 53 cm 36 – 47 cm 26 cm
M 7 – 10 kg 41 – 63 cm 40 – 48 cm 30 cm
L 10 – 20 kg 50 – 75 cm 42 – 54 cm 35 cm
XL 20 – 35 kg 70 – 95 cm 50 – 71 cm 45 cm

A word about L. It covers everything from 10 kg to 20 kg — double the weight across one size. If your dog is at the light end of that band, measure his chest before you order.

Do not automatically size up. That advice works for a harness. It does not work here. A loose life jacket rides up under the chin and pushes the head sideways instead of holding it up, which is the opposite of what you bought it for. Size to fit, and use the straps.

Measure the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.

Material, safety testing and care

Polyester shell and lining over EPE closed-cell foam, with a mesh belly panel.

The materials and construction have been independently tested against US CPSC consumer safety regulations: sharp points, sharp edges, small parts, use and abuse, flammability of solids, and phthalates.

Hand wash and line dry. Rinse the salt or the chlorine out after every swim.

Questions

Will this stop my dog drowning?
No. It is a buoyancy aid, not a lifeguard, and it does not replace you being there. It is built to keep a tiring dog level and his head clear for long enough that you can reach him. If your dog is in water, you are within reach of him. That is the rule, and no vest changes it.

Which size for my dog?
Weight first, chest girth second. If the two point to different sizes, email us before you order and we will help you choose. If your dog is at the light end of L, read the note in the sizing table.

Will it fit a heavy dog?
XL takes dogs up to 35 kg, with a chest up to 95 cm. For heavy, deep-chested breeds, check the chest girth as well as the weight — the vest has to close around the body.

Can my dog learn to swim in it?
It is a good place to start — shallow water, you in it beside him, the chin float on. Take the chin float off once he is paddling properly. And show him where the steps or the bank are before he ever needs them.

My dog hates wearing things. Will he wear this?
Start on dry land. Put it on him indoors, a few minutes at a time, before it goes anywhere near water. Keep him in the shallows until he is calm wearing it.

Beach, pool or boat?
All three. Rinse it in fresh water and line dry it afterwards.

What if it does not fit?
Email us within 30 days and we will sort it out.

Why we sell this one

The dogs that need a life jacket most are easy to miss: the frenchie who tips backwards, the staffie who swims like a brick, the old dog whose back legs give out halfway across the lake.

This one is built for them.
